Students were asked to write a poem answering the question:
If the World Was Your Classroom, What Would you teach a girl?
——
If the world was my classroom I would take my girl to see the under-privileged,
If the world was my classroom I would take my girl to see the middle-class,
If the world was my classroom I would take my girl to the aristocracy,
If the world was my classroom I would take my girl to see love,
If the world was my classroom I would take my girl to see jealousy,
If the world were my classroom I would take my girl to see hatred,
If the world were my classroom I would take my girl to see kindness,
If the world were my classroom I would take my girl to see family.
If the world was my classroom I would take my girl to see the wonders of the world,
If the world was my classroom I would take my girl to see the worst things in the world,
If the world were my classroom I would take my girl to visit those older and wiser.
In my classroom the lessons would be endless but amazing and worthwhile all the same.

I sit with my student
On the edge of a cloud
With the classroom below
Her eagerness glows bright
I teach her the joy and pain of womanhood
I teach her the binding love of sisterhood
I teach her the gentle ways of motherhood
I teach her the innocent ways of childhood
Once the lesson is done
The girl must begin her livelihood
Together we step down
And enter the classroom of the world.

A girl is no less than any kind of man
She can be as successful as any kind of guy can
I keep hearing the world tell us that a female has her place
I thought we were all equal in what we call the “human race”
Does she want to be the president? It hasn’t happened, but she could do it
She could be brilliant and magnificent, give her the chance! I bet she’ll prove it!
Her life could be more than how she is told it’s supposed to be
She shouldn’t feel limited, that’s really my only plea.
If she chooses to stay at home; that’s good! That’s great! That’s fine!
She gets to raise the future, that role is one that’s quite divine!
But if she wants more for herself, no one tell her that she can’t!!
Plain and simple, you better tell her, “Girl, you’ve got a chance!”
She should know that she is powerful, and she can impact the lives of millions
She could change the world! Heck, she could bank a couple billions!
Being female is an honor, no one ever make it sound like less
I want this girl to know she’s awesome, not a catastrophic mess!
She may not look like the model type that is seen on a magazine cover
Who cares! She’s determined! She’s ambitious! She’s a fighter and a lover!
If I could teach her just one thing, just something, oh anything:
“Girl, never hold yourself back! Now, go and get your dream!”

I would teach you to enjoy the silence.
It’s happy silence, heavy and wrapping.
Breathe in the turbulence of the world and
Release it to the wind, filling the hungry lungs of women just like you.
Women in Vanuatu, and Bhutan, and Arkansas.
I would teach you to be kind,
For every woman is gripped by the struggle.
A face dusty and haggard has its own elegance and beauty.
Understand the wrinkles in a woman’s brow,
Even if you do not understand where they were born from,
Because they go down all seven layers.
I would teach you, finally, to teach yourself.
Weave curiosity and eccentricity into your life.
Find the gems in the fields that have long
Since been plucked of glittery rewards.
Carve your own paths into the mountains
That aren’t yet leathery and traveled.
Remember this, for eternal learning makes one eternally young.

If the world was my classroom, I would teach a girl about what and who makes up this world.
I would take her to Egypt to observe the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
I would take her to the fashion capital of Milan, Italy to see where creativity in design is one-of-a-kind.
I would take her to the Great Wall of China, one of the world’s greatest structures for defense.
I would take her to the United Kingdom to see Stonehenge, a megalithic rock monument.
I would take her to Australia to listen to music and watch ballet at the Sydney Opera House.
I would take her to Tanzania to explore Mount Kilimanjaro and its three volcanic cones.
I would take her to France to learn how to make tomato bisque or crème brulée.
I would take her to the Amazon River in South America, which is the largest river in the world.
I would take her to Peru to climb Machu Picchu, one of the Incas best creations.
I would take her to New York to view the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom.
If the world was my classroom, each day is a new day to learn and discover.

Dear nine year old girl,
Enjoy the days when you and your dad would twirl.
Before you know it time flies
And soon you will be in junior high.
Don’t worry this is your awkward stage,
You will be beautiful by your 17th year of age.
In high school there will be many boys,
I encourage you to have fun but handle them with poise.
If the star quarterback doesn’t see that you are beautiful inside and out
Don’t worry I’ve heard college boys are what its all about.
So be patient with your life, enjoy being little,
And always remember, you don’t need a man to live your life like there’s no tomorrow.

Be passionate
Be passionate about life
Enthusiastically
Be passionate about love
Unconditionally
Be passionate about others
Selflessly
Be passionate about knowledge
Curiously
Be passionate about challenges
Gratefully
Be passionate about opportunity
Ceaselessly

Lessons I absorbed
through penetrable snakeskin,
every line a year of stumbles and mistakes
adding up like hard raindrops
In my arms she is shielded
by all my experience
every battle scar earned
from the perfect horror of ordinary days,
the constant weight of measuring ourselves
by the number of fingers on our skin
Someday I will be old
and she will be a woman bloomed
I will smile through my grey hair
watching her go to war
Armed with the heart she forged in an eon of personhood.

It doesn’t matter how much you weigh,
if you’re straight, lesbian, or gay,
you are beautiful in every way.
Tell yourself this every day,
then and only then may
others believe what you say.
Don’t allow yourself to be someone’s prey,
you are just as great as all the things they
desperatly try to portray.
